A good product is not a bucket of features, a mere bulleted list of things users can do. A good product is an exercise in exclusion. A good product is defined as much by what it doesn’t do as by what it does.

In most agencies, account executives outnumber the copywriters two to one. If you were a dairy farmer, would you employ twice as many milkers as you had cows?

PressPausePlay is a documentary by Stockholm-based agency House of Radon about the ongoing Digital Revolution and how it unleashes creativity and talent in an unprecedented way. So far this is the best documentary I’ve seen about creation in the age of Digital. Does democratization of culture mean better creations or extended mediocrity? This is the question tackled by PressPausePlay with interviewees including Moby, Seth Godin and Sean Parker. If you haven’t watched it yet, you should definitely give it a try.
Sometimes I’m on my computer, and Reader doesn’t work on your web app. I hit CMD + two or three times so that my dyslexic brain can make sense of the musty 14px Helvetica your servers regurgitated all over my screen. Then the layout falls apart. Words start smashing together. Ads bleed into my emails. And I find myself scrolling up, down, left, right, left, right – what in the hell is this? The Konami code? I don’t need 30 extra lives. I want to read your content.

In graphic design, nothing is what it actually is. Everything other than content is representative of something else. Additionally, much of the content is also merely representative of something other than what it actually is.

Erik Spiekermann is the man. The more I watch his interviews and speeches the more he inspires me. He’s such a passionate, humble and curious designer and typographer with such a great vision and sense of metaphor. Here’s a great quote from him:
“Read as much as you can, listen as much as you can, travel as much as you can, talk to as much people as you can, gather all the shit for years and years and when you think your head is almost full then you start other because your head is very very empty.“

There are no shortcuts to good design. There are no silver bullets, no magic buttons, no silver sixpences. Every design problem is unique. Design is a process, not a product. And you cannot take part in the process by ignoring the irrational, emotional, unpredictable beings who will be using your products.
